Treatment for a nasal fracture depends on the severity of the break and can include conservative management such as rest, ice, NSAIDS and head of bed elevation; More severe breaks, open fractures, displaced fractures or fractures with septal hematomas (blood trapped in the middle of the nose) may require antibiotics, splinting or surgery. Manual realignment can be performed within 14 days if the fracture is displaced. Some fractures may result in a deviated nasal septum which could affect nasal breathing down the line.

As a general rule:

  • Avoid activities that could bump your nose and try to get some rest.
  • Apply ice to your nose for 20 minutes every 1–2 hours while you're awake. Don't apply ice directly to your skin.
  • Take over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin, or acetaminophen.
  • Keep your head elevated to reduce swelling and improve breathing using pillows, wedges or even sleeping in recliners.
  • Be careful with use of nasal decongestants such as Afrin as these are HABIT FORMING.
